Our First trip for 2012, we choose Oxford and use the Camping and Caravan site. The site is convieniently sited next to the Park and Ride, excellent for those who drive Motorhomes and have decided to connect their van to the side of a tent. Think electric car with a non detachable cable..mmmmmm?
The day started better than expected, weather wise. Unfortunately the Wardens had decided not to allow us to erect an awning, this means that all meals will not only have to be prepared in side the van but eaten inside the van as well. This will call for alot of manoeuvring of furniture and squeezing past bodies " I speak of the last part with my tongue in my cheek full of anticipation." Breakfast goes well without any casualties. Togged up against the chill wind , we walk along the River Thames into town ( or is it City?), admiring all the rowers. On the way we see a "Bullfinch" unfortunately camera shy so you will just have to take my word. Thirsty and in need of a toilet stop we head into the YHA, we are entertained by an American couple circumnavigating the world, whilst we drink our cup of tea. The rest of the day is spent exploring the many streets around the centre with its numerous Colleges. For lunch we grab a couple of cooked sausages from "David John" the butchers and a cup of tea from the oldest Cafe in the covered market. Our last day in Oxford, scrambled egg, bacon on muffin, a 5* breakfast, campsite eggs Benedict. We walk back into Oxford, this time with a view to exploring the museums. Our first museum is The Ashmolean "link" http://www.ashmolean.org/ and its recently added Egyptian exhibition, how I would love to see the Pyramids. After a coffee and a pastry from Tesco's Express, we head for the Natural History museum, which is presently undergoing some renovation work on the roof. However Pitt Rivers museum at the back of the Natural History Museum is open and well worth a visit " link" http://www.prm.ox.ac.uk/ . We walk back along the River Thames, soon reaching the camp site and our Sunday dinner. |
